Replace both rear tires or one will be fine?

So I had fun tonight with a pothole around 2am... Popped one of my rear tires. Won't hold pressure, not sure how serious it is. Now the question is will it be fine just to replace the ruined tire and keep the other side? Or would it be necessary to replace both?

I ask because I have the car sitting outside a Toyota dealership, I wanted to be educated before I go back in when they opens.

If tire don't show visible damage you might want to try just changing the valve? If damaged of course just throw it away.

Changing the other side depends of its state and age, but most of the time it is easier to just buy 2 new tires so you are sure they are same models and grip level

If you popped a tire, you may have damaged a rim. Emphasis on May. Might want to get it checked for being out of round as well.

i’ve raced cars on the track and never hit anything hard enough to pop a tire. But I have hit bumps and berms hard enough to bend a wheel.

and as PaulFRDE stated, it depends on the tire. Check how much wear the tire has with a wear gauge, and then compare that to a new. If you are within 20%, not likely enough to cause any issues.

My guess is you damaged a wheel if the tire looks ok.

Fortunately, the wheel wasn't damaged. Punctured the right tire beyond repair. I went ahead and replaced both tires, was due to replace them anyway.

I will avoid driving around this area going forward, drove the same route with my truck today and there were potholes all over like this one. Crazy... The picture attached is the one I hit.

Dang that's a helluva pothole. You should see if you can get your city to reimburse you. Glad you got the car sorted.

Don't get me wrong, I know other cities has it worse, it's not as bad here, but that's pushing it. I'm not brave enough to drive around cities like yours.

Kudos to you,
